Depots and Humans on the Moon

The point of this blog is to create opportunities for companies to be started. To do this, we must keep an eye out for what the future of spaceflight will be. In this light, I'd like to highlight two blog posts (at QuantumG) that I think ask some very good questions in this regard.

The first is a post about propellant depots in LEO. The use of resources in space will be very important in order to reduce the requirements of transporting resources from the surface of the earth. I will expect many people will try to establish depots of many kinds and become suppliers of fuel, rare metals as well as manufactured parts (eventually). Some of the ways to differentiate all these enterprises will be developing and deploying new technologies (which will not be negligible in the early years) as well as chosing the best location for the type of depot/supply of goods delivered.

As said in the post, it will be customers that will determine the optimale location, although it is the entrepreneurs job to know what the customer wants before they do.

The second post is about humans on the moon, which discusses how humans are not needed on the moon for scientific study of the geology of the moon (I agree!). It also mentions that it is possible that humans may not be able to live or reproduce on the moon (I don't think this is true but is a fantastic point!)

Businesses in space will be needed to supply vital consumption resources for any settlements in space (moon, mars or wherever). If human presence (famillies as defined by QuantumG) will be limited in certain locations, that will certainly affect what resources will be needed where. This will in turn direct where the best location is for any given depot of resources, whatever they are.
